Cancel the diet this January

Winter, it's a time for cosying up in front of fires, going on long walks, spending time with loved ones. It's also an important time to rest, reflect, be quiet, become more withdrawn and to get more sleep. All to replenish ourself ahead of the higher energy times of Spring and Summer.

Looking at the seasons, it makes it easy to see why we find it so difficult to stick to a diet in January. We often try and avoid the alone time that winter calls for and we busy ourselves celebrating, socialising and eating and drinking heartily, especially in December. So by the time January comes we are feeling stagnant and desiring balance. How about we turn the idea of a diet with it's restrictions, it's salads and it's disappoint on it's head.

Let's bring back the balance that we crave and do that with homemade stews, soups and apple crumble.

Food that hydrates us, foods that nourish us, foods that satisfy us.

January a month of spending time in the kitchen with loved one's, a month of tuning in with yourself, keeping a journal, reading books, watching the odd movie.

Mmmm that sounds so much nicer, right?

Why don't you give it a try this January, start the year by being kind to yourself, move onto the detox in Spring as that's then the perfect time.

Healthy Hot Chocolate:

1 tbsp raw cacao powder (packed full of magnesium, antioxidants and mood boosters)

1 tbsp (natural) maple syrup or honey

250ml of your favourite plant based milk (mine is rude health almond milk)

pinch of sea or pink salt

1 tsp of mixed spice, nutmeg, cinnamon, chai spice, ginger, chilli etc - optional

Add the cocoa powder, spices and syrup/honey to a mug, stir into a paste with a splash of hot water and top with warm milk.

I also like to play around with other superfood powders to make hot drinks, carob and lacuma is a lovely mix if you happen to have these ingredients, and it's naturally caffeine free and no additional sweeter is needed.
